The city's police chief announced Monday night that a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who had been wounded, Joshua Eyer, had also died. Police initially said they believed there was a second shooter in the house, but officials have since walked that back. At a news conference Tuesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings told reporters that it seemed shots rang out after Hughes was taken down by police and that gunfire rang came from "multiple locations within the house." Eyer, the CMPD officer whose death was announced Monday night, is survived by his wife and a 3-year-old son, the police chief said.

Hoover suffered a gunshot wound to an area of his upper torso that was unprotected by his bulletproof vest, Statesville police said in a news release. He underwent surgery and is stable and expected to make a full recovery, police said. Three other Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers who responded to the shooting were shot, Jennings said. They were identified as Christopher Tolley, Michael Giglio and Jack Blowers. Dean W. Colvard (1913–2007) was appointed the first chancellor of the young university in 1966. A North Carolina native, Colvard had served as president of Mississippi State University (MSU). At MSU he was the first president to defy university policy of not playing against integrated teams when he ordered the men's basketball team to play Loyola University Chicago in 1963. At UNC Charlotte, Colvard took on the challenge of converting the school from a small college to a four-year member of the UNC system. Indeed, he had been chosen specifically because UNC system officials believed the newly minted UNC Charlotte needed a leader with experience running a four-year university.

Charlene Middleton, a 36-year-old school counselor, has lived in the area her whole life and, since 2015, in a home across the street from where the incident occurred.
